This is a standard five or six day route. It is used by around 70% of Kilimanjaro climbers. This is the only route that climbers both ascend and descend. All other routes have specified descent routes that are different from the ascent routes. More about this route.

This is a standard six day route. It is the second most popular route on the mountain with an alternative, more challenging ascent trail to Uhuru Peak after the second day. Climbers ascending by this route are required to descend to Mweka gate. More about this route.

This is a descent only route. The national park's policy is to minimise degradation of the mountain trails, and it therefore limits the numbers of climbers on individual ascent and descent trails. However, all routes beginning from Shira (Londorossi), Machame and Umbwe must use the Mweka route for descent, so climbers can still experience this route.

This standard six day route is the steepest to the base of Kibo. It ascends the Umbwe Valley, and in several places is a scramble. It should only be attempted by people in excellent physical condition. More about this route.

This is the only route that ascends from the northern slopes of the mountain. It is very similar in nature to the Marangu route, but it involves camping. The addition of a sixth day offers a unique opportunity to visit Mawenzi tarn and the northern amphitheatre of Mawenzi. More about this route.
