Umbwe Route
The Umbwe Route starts at Umbwe Gate and follows a steep ridge through dense montane forest before joining the Southern Circuit at Barranco Camp. The route includes the Barranco Wall, Karanga Valley, and Barafu Camp before the summit ascent via Stella Point. Descent is made via Mweka Camp and exits at Mweka Gate. This is a 6-day camping route with significant elevation gain early in the trek.

Itinerary
Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Forest Camp
From Umbwe Gate (1,800 m) the trail climbs steeply on a forested ridge between deep valleys.
You hike 5–6 hours through dense montane forest to reach the first camp at about 2,850 m.
Carry water from the gate as there is none at this camp.
Day 2: Forest Camp to Barranco Camp
Leaving the forest behind, you ascend steeply up a ridge with dramatic views of Kibo and the surrounding plains.
The trail then drops into a valley and traverses the western flank of the mountain to reach Barranco Camp at about 3,950 m after 6–7 hours of hiking.
Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Valley Camp
You start the day by climbing the imposing Barranco Wall – a 300‑m scramble that rewards you with incredible views.
From the top, follow the Southern Circuit across ridges and valleys before descending into the Karanga Valley.
After crossing the valley, a short ascent brings you to Karanga Valley Camp at about 4,000 m.
Day 4: Karanga Valley to Barafu Camp
A short day to aid acclimatisation. Leave the Karanga Valley after breakfast and climb steadily up a rocky ridge for around three hours to reach Barafu Camp (about 4,600 m). Spend the afternoon resting and preparing for the night-time summit attempt.
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp
You'll wake just after midnight for the summit attempt. Climb the rocky ridge and zigzag scree slopes for about seven hours to reach Stella Point (5,750 m) on the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). After enjoying the summit views, descend to Barafu camp for rest and lunch, then continue down to Mweka Camp (about 3,100 m); some groups may overnight at Millennium Camp.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
After breakfast, descend steadily through lush montane forest for about three hours from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (around 1,630 m). Sign out and collect your summit certificates at the park gate before returning to Marangu Hotel for a hot shower and celebration.
