Lake Chala

45 mins – 1 hour, each way
Lake Chala is a volcanic caldera (collapsed volcano) which is filled with water where you can rent kayaks and go for walks around the crater rim.

Lake Jipe

2.5 – 3 hours, each way
Lake Jipe is a small shallow lake which is along the Kenya-Tanzania border near the Pare Mountains and is home to many hippos, crocodiles and some elephants. Boat rides with local fisherman can be organized upon request.

Arusha National Park

3 hours, each way
Arusha National Park is about two hours away from Marangu Hotel. It is a relatively small park, and can easily be visited in a day. Arusha National Park is home to Mount Meru, the fifth highest mountain in Africa. It has a diverse array of wildlife and beautiful vegetation including a famous fig tree. Walking safaris are a great option here, as many of the areas are forested and you will be protected from the strong African sun!

Mkomazi National Park

2 hours, each way
Mkomazi is the least visited park in Northern Tanzania and is located next to the West Usambara Mountains. It borders Tsavo National Park, in Kenya and has some very unique species and ecosystems not commonly found in Tanzania, including wild dogs, and Beisa Oryx.

Kikuletwa Hotsprings

2 hours, each way
Natural hot springs, with crystal clear water, surrounded by roots of fig trees and palm trees, located about an hour and a half from the hotel, is a well deserved and refreshing treat after climbing Kilimanjaro!

Moshi Town Tour

45 mins – 1 hour, each way
Explore the bustling city of Moshi, which is located about 40 minutes from Marangu Hotel

Rau Forest Walk (in Moshi)

45 min – 1 hour, each way
A small forest located within Moshi where you have a chance to see several types of monkeys and birds, as well as walking through rice plantations and visiting a sacred tree believed to be almost 200 years old.

Pare Mountain Hikes

1.5 – 2 hours, each way
A hike through Pare Mountains takes visitors through local villages and beautiful forests, and offers an opportunity to explore roads less traveled. On the top of Southern Pare Mountains is the Chome Forest reserve, which is a dense tropical forest with many rare trees and plants. Hikes through the mountains can be multi-day trips and can also be combined with a trip to Mkomazi National Park and Lake Jipe

On the edge of the Marangu Hotel property, close to the swimming pool, is a small plateau overlooking the river which flows along the edge of our property. With stunning views down to the plains below the mountain, this is a secret place where you can enjoy a drink and listen to the river and the birds. The original farming family who started Marangu Hotel, the Lanys, called this their “Tell Platte” – William Tell’s slab.
